Cynwyd Trail opens Sunday! (10/23)

posted Oct 20, 2011 2:03 PM by Scott Reynolds   [ updated Oct 20, 2011 2:12 PM ]
This Sunday, October 23, 2011, Lower Merion Township will join Radnor as a
neighboring township with a first-class multi-use trail. The two-mile Cynwyd
Heritage Trail will have a festive grand opening event from 1-4pm. The paved
trail is on a former rail right-of-way, starting at Cynwyd Station, where
SEPTA's regional rail service presently ends. The Lower Merion Historical
Society is restoring the railroad station there. The trail winds between
West Laurel Hill and Westminster cemeteries, where in bygone days funeral
parties came by train, disembarking at small, purpose-built rail stations.
The cemeteries have now been working to clear brush and reopen these
entrances, which will tie in to their miles of internal paths. Why not take
the chance to check it all out this Sunday? For more into see
   www.cynwydtrail.org.

If you want to get there by bike, see the suggested route from Karakung
Drive and Manoa Road (link below) or meet up with small group of “Friends”
at 12:15 PM Sunday to bike together to the Cynwyd Heritage Trail
celebration.  It is a 4.2 mile (each way) hilly ride on moderately bikeable
roads to the ribbon cutting location on the trail.
